I also must be the last person on Earth to have discovered Doctor Who.

Not that I didn't know it was out there, but it's a hard show to catch in terms of "when the fuck is it on and where?"

It's the fucking shit. One of the best shows I've seen. Now I understand why everyone's been raving about it for years. It really is that good. Three episodes in (lol, familiar?) and I'm totally sold.

Cheesy and hilarious and angsty and intense, and how often do you get that combination??

It's supposed to hemorrhage snow today.

Well, you see, most people think of time as like a straight line of cause and effect, when really time is more like...well, a big ball... of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.

My brother has just recently got me into it as well. If you haven't seen them yet, I really highly recommend "Blink" and "The Girl in the Fireplace".

Oh, I probably should have asked to clarify. Are you watching the old series with the first 8 Doctors, or the new series with Claude from Heroes and the most recent Doctor?

Yeah, that's Claude. I'm not sure how to get the older stuff either. It's nearly impossible to get anything before the Fourth Doctor. There are over 700 episodes total, so it's kind of a mess for new fans like you and I. Perhaps we should stick to the new series for the time being.

Oh, and the multiple Doctors thing isn't a spoiler. Basically, it was a way for the writers to recast the Doctor without driving the continuity crazy.

As you know, the Doctor is the last of an alien race called Time Lords. Other than having mastered the art of time travel, Time Lords also possess the gift of being able to "regenerate" if they die. Basically, when they regenerate they completely change their appearance, behavior, and certain abilities, but always retain their memories. They are capable of regenerating 12 times (meaning there can be a total of 13 Doctors before rewriting the rules). The most recent one is the 10th Doctor. There are Time Lords who have regenerated more than 12 times, but they usually have severe side affects and craziness.

I personally love how they don't just pull a James Bond, they have a logical explanation for the varying appearance and behavior of the Doctor.

Yeah, though many of those are either lost or not generally available (unless you're an obsessive fan). It's the longest running Sci-Fi series. Star Trek just barely had it beat for a while during its lapse in the 90s, but since the relaunch, it has pulled in front again.

OMG SPOILERZ!

That I believe hasn't been totally revealed yet, but I think it's eventually implied that Doctor Who did something like blow up the Time Lord's planet in order to stop the Daleks. A last resort sort of thing. I dunno, I've only seen three episodes myself, so I can't say. In any case, the war supposedly accounts for his more aggressive and dark personality in contrast with his earlier incarnations.

The show started in the 60s and they didn't imagine it being that popular nor did they predict things like VCRs and DVD. Many early episodes were lost or damaged due to apathy.

The Time War was between the Time Lords and the Daleks I believe. Daleks are robot... things.

Lol, I'll try.

And I watched the first episode today (the few episodes I've seen were out of sequence and you starting to watch it has inspired me to begin going through it chronologically) and now I get your title in conjunction with the LJ Icon you used for this entry. Lol.

Did you see the second part to that yet? "The Doctor Dances"? It has a rather good ending.

My brother tells me that it almost never happens when nobody dies in a Doctor Who episode, let alone a two-parter.

Oh, and one of the episode just Rick Rolled me.

Oh, and I don't know whether you like Jack Harkness (the guy who was introduced in this episode), but even if you do, do NOT see the show "Torchwood". It's a spin-off starring that character. It is terrible. Don't waste your time with it.
