The time has come, my friends. I am a writer. I play Pokemon and other silly video games. I have participated in online LJ RP games. I have long discussions about various sci-fi shows and watch things like Star Trek, Farscape, Doctor Who and Firefly. I respect William Shatner. I watch anime with a somewhat religious fervor at times. I have conversations about the merits of certain weapons, the various histories and lifestyles of the Middle Ages, and complain about historical or logical inaccuracies in movies concerning the era. I have been to a Renn Faire. I have gone to sci-fi and fantasy cons, as well as anime cons. I read comic books, webcomics and manga. I play WoW. I collect Magic Cards. I'm an amateur astronomer and I listen to shortwave radio. I can readily quote Star Wars.

In short, I am a full blown nerd. And the time has now come to tackle the last bastion of nerddom, to venture into the fearsome, Mountain Dew-soaked, Cheeto-stained basement in the nether regions of the House of Nerd.

Yes, my friends. I speak of Dungeons and Dragons.

I am, as we speak, in the process of building a character and will soon start a campaign involving my similarly nerdy Ithaca friends. I am learning all about Spot Checks, Ability Modifiers, and D20s.

With this, I say my final farewell to the world of coolness, fashion and all semblance of sanity. Farewell, Lady Gaga, Eat, Pray, Love, 24, and True Blood. Goodbye, Justin Bieber and Louis Vuitton. Auf wiedersehn, mainstream media. To make a nerd quote, "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." I go now to the Land of Fun, the Plane of Silliness, and the House of Nerd, and never shall I return to hipness, coolness and popularity. Good night...and good luck.

Just be glad I'm not LARPing.

Gnee!

Soooo, as if I needed another thing to fill my time, I've stumbled upon one of the greatest webcomics of all time--Hanna Is Not a Boy's Name. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, selkies, great comedy, great art style, and too much adorable for words. Seriously, it's excellent--the best webcomic I've seen in awhile, and I have a whole damn file devoted to webcomics. Also Hanna reminds me scarily of Jin.

While I'm on the topic of webcomics; IDK if I ever got around to mentioning this one before (good god I need to update more often), but another great webcomic I've been following for awhile is Freakangels which...is more like a comic that happens to be online. The writer, Warren Ellis, is already a big name in comic books (he's written some X-Men stuff as well as plenty of originals). Twelve kids with superpowers who kinda broke the world and are sorta trying to put it back together. Craziness abounds. Excellent and quite pretty.

Also, here's one I've been waiting for for awhile: The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal. I have the artist bookmarked on DA and I'd been following her work for awhile; I knew a webcomic or sommat was in the works, but I had no idea she'd actually started it. Quite a happy discovery the other day. No superpowers in this one, just two guys roadtripping across America and discovering themselves.

Lastly, not a webcomic but quite possibly the greatest blog of all time.

That's all for now. All this awesome art/writing makes me want to go write myself. The Jin novel is plugging along, though with my lack of serious writing lately it's like riding a bike after...not, for like a year. You never forget, but you sort of go "wait, is this how I change gears?" Let's just say I think I'm gonna be doing a lot of rewriting, lol, but at least it's getting down on paper.

Or, uh, pixels?
talkingsoup: (failures)
I've been so unbelievably BORED lately. Which is probably part of the reason I haven't posted anything in, like, months. Plenty of stuff has happened, but most of it is big, overarching real life stuff, the kind of things that are just sort of there and that you can't focus on 24/7. Boring stuff.

Let's see...I got a new job. I'm a part-time caretaker for an old lady with Alzheimer's and dementia. There's a total of five of us who look after her 24/7, and it's all under the table, working right in the lady's house. We get paid by one of her daughters. It's pretty decent money, but I really need a second job. My parents are currently paying my rent, but I'm 23 and that's really got to stop. I can't keep mooching on them forever.

Money's been tight all around, which is one of the reasons why Julie has decided to move back home to Minnesota. She needs to get out of here, or at least get away from her current job, which has been crushing her so bad that it's actually painful to watch. I'd like to keep living with her, but this is probably what's best for her.

It also means Pat and I need to find a smaller, cheaper apartment, and that we're both going to be paying more overall for rent. Which is also no good, for one thing because Pat will be paying more than half, which isn't fair, and because my parents will be picking up my half. I'm such a leech.

Speaking of parents, I'll be heading home sometime in July for the annual star party at Yosemite. It'll be good to be back for awhile. And I swear one day I'm gonna drag Pat and Julie with me.

I've gotten thoroughly addicted to Glee and Supernatural. Well, not Supernatural so much anymore. Julie found it first and then we all marathoned basically the whole thing in a matter of weeks. I don't have much desire to see the next season, though I'll try it out. Glee just continues to be awesome, with really great comedy and well-rounded characters. It makes for a hilarious parody of high school in general.

Saw Ironman 2, loved it, saw Kickass, loved it, and I think that's all in the way of movies.

Meanwhile I was pretty addicted to World of Warcraft, but last week my account got hacked and stolen. I'm still waiting to hear from Blizzard, but in the meantime I haven't been able to play at all. Ah well. It's nice to have a good long break from it.

On the anime front, the three of us here have been marathoning Yu Yu Hakusho...I don't really know why, but does there need to be a reason? It's awesome either way. I've also been steadfastly watching the Darker than BLACK OAVS (AMAZING), and two new shows called Durarara and Angel Beats, which are both pretty sweet in different ways. Also Hetalia, since Heathers got me hooked.

I'm finally writing again, specifically a new novel. This is the Jin novel that I'm pretty sure I've mentioned a few times. Basically, space dragons and evil robots. It's fun so far, though for some reason I'm not as crazy-into-it as I was with my previous novels. I've just been so...blase about writing in general, but I'm getting back into it. I think the lack of significant RP lately has something to do with that. I love Route 47, and I think it's gonna keep going for a good while, but it's been so slow for almost a month and a half now that it's become this casual thing, instead of taking up a good portion of my day like before. IDK. I'm just really unmotivated lately.

Another reason that I'm glad I'm going back home soon, even if it's just for a week, is that I think I'm needed there. I swear, I love my brother but he's going to kill my parents with the stress he causes. If it's not drug addiction and the police, it's fights with the neighbors. This is a major reason I want to become financially independent, because my parents have enough to worry about with Ben around. He really does seem to be trying to do better, but it's not happening fast enough. The best I can do is try to take my burden off of them.

Ah well. Life goes on, even when Israeli commandos are killing activists, the Koreans are at war again, and the oil at the Deepwater Horizon just will not stop flowing.

Sigh

Got a case of the writer emos again. I hate reading something amazing only to feel inadequate in comparison. It just feels selfish.

I just really wish I could write and be amazing instead of writing and being mediocre.
talkingsoup: (writer)
Well, I got through the first major rewrite of Mot. Although I'm not entirely sure if it can be called a rewrite since I didn't do much more than leave footnotes for myself and make some tweaks. There's a couple of major things I need to rewrite, but I'm gonna take it slow, one step at a time and all that. The two biggest problems are the beginning and the length. I tend to stress a lot about length, but upon rereading it there really are some places where stuff can be cut out or trimmed down. Again, the beginning needs to be tightened up like hell.

But I think I'm off to a good start! I'm happy, because I'm making real progress and finally taking real steps to get this damn thing "finished" and published.

What I really need now is to do some how-to reading, and to get someone to read this mother.

An agent would be nice too :|a

THIS IS AN UPDATE.

Yes I am alive. The reason for my lack of posting is uh. Laziness and post-graduation now what/lawl future/lawl real life/fuck it I'm gonna sit on my ass for a few months ness that is now graaaadually wearing off. Yup. Mostly because I haven't been writing or doing anything productive this entire time and it's catching up to me in the form of OH GOD MY WORTHLESS EXISTEEEEENCE.

It's almost three AM, which explains this incoherence.

ANYWAY. It is almost Christmahanukwanzaayule again. Hooray! I have no money with which to buy presents for people. Boo! I'm relying at this point on tiny things that are cheap but awesome. Which reminds me, HEY, CMAK AKA [livejournal.com profile] kuribohcoast I NEED YOUR ADDRESSSSSSSS or you won't get presents and I will be sad ):

Oh, another reason for my lack of posting? I am now officially a WoWfag. Yeah. Inorite? Well, it's fun, when it works and when the patches update alright which they're not right now, and I'm not addicted (yet) so. It's sort of the same as RP in its addictive qualities, however, in terms of like "As soon as I finish this tag" which in WoW's case is "As soon as I finish this quest!"

But at the very least I think I'm ready to make a concerted effort not only to just generally write more but to really get to work on the edits/rewrites for Motley Crew. If not Pentagram as well. But, lol, for those of you who have known me awhile, you know how well my declarations of "I'M GONNA DO IT THIS TIME" go, so we'll see. At least I have a sort of method this time for keeping myself working on the edits. Plus new ideas keep springing up. Now if only I could buckle down and actually start either North or Jin or something...

I also need to finish my resume WHICH I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON SINCE AUGUST. Laziness and an unwillingness to enter the real world much?

Currently we have all just gotten back from Darkover con (which was awesome), we had our own Thanksgiving at home (I made Cornish game hens and didn't set anything on fire!), Julie has a book deal for her co-authorship with Tammy for the Tortallverse (Cara's in on it too), Pat still has his steady job and I'm...still at Michaels.

*sigh*

Also as of today the kitten is sick. Pogo has gotten a cold like this pretty consistently around this time so hopefully it's nothing serious. If she's still sick in a few days/she gets worse we're taking her to the vet, pet health program or not.

Oh and the second season of Darker than BLACK is out, and is about halfway over, and is awesome. That is all.
talkingsoup: (ferris wheel)
Koop has done it again! His last video had something missing from it--but it's back in this most recent video of his, Twilight. It's beautifully rendered, the song fits wonderfully, and it's got the deep sense of emotion that was missing from the previous video. Hooray!

...And now I need to see Kanon. Well, crap.

Called in sick to work today because I woke up feeling insanely tired and woozy. So I slept in, hung around the house for awhile and walked to the Commons. Got a mate from my favorite cult NRM. Then finally managed to check out the little liquor store near the Lost Dog. Good selection! They even have a bottle of tequila complete with worm, which is a big win for me.

My last year of college begins on Wednesday. What the fuck. What happened to all of my time? The future's coming at me so fast. I have no idea what I want to do with my life beyond writing. Although lately I've been semi-sort-of-seriously considering...voice acting. Yeah...weird, I know. But I'm pretty good at sound effects, so...*shrug?*

Starting my senior project on Wednesday as well (supposedly). I'm going to be working on revising Pentagram. Should be epic. Should also get me off my lazy ass on editing the damn thing and maybe, hopefully, starting to send it out. Of course I've said that before, but this time it's for an actual grade. So.

Speaking of college, my brother's begun at Expressions, which is an art college in California. He's in their Sound Design program, which is pretty amazing. Apparently he loves it, but I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him yet.

Work is going well, though hell if I can figure out the website :\

*wards off the oncoming Future with various talismans*
talkingsoup: (doctor serious)
Yeah, remember me? Look, I'm alive!

So, summing up the past, what, two months? We have moved into our apartment/house and are slowly making it all homey, our landlord is an anal retentive douchebag, Julie and I got cats--Elwood and Nephry (Elwood is mine), I went home to see my brother's graduation (he actually did it!), and I finally got a job--at Michael's. I'm actually going in for my second day in about an hour :D

Julie and I are still in the RP, of course. It is so epically awesome. I absolutely love the people there, they're all such good players. I'm actually playing two characters now--Hei and Amaterasu from Okami.

We're still working our way through Persona 3 and Tales of the Abyss. Also, I bought a few new games for Ezili (my DS) including The World Ends With You. I like it so far! And I finished the first Phoenix Wright game, hooray! The last case was pretty epic.

I finished the first season of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni which was terrifying and awesome. Now I need to get through the second season (ni Kai). I'm also working my way through the 114 episodes and several OAVs of cheese that is Saint Seiya. It's ridiculously epic.

Julie and I have begun, watched through, and finished what we both agree is the best television show we've ever seen, which is Life on Mars. The British version. We don't talk about the forthcoming American version. Basically, Sam Tyler is a cop who gets hit by a car and suddenly ends up back in 1973. Awesomeness ensues.

More evidence of the BBC's prowess for good telly, Doctor Who has been pretty amazing this season, with a couple of ups and downs. The most recent episode was...well. "Fuckawesome" comes to mind. I'm talking about the most recent episode that aired in Britain (and is of course available online), not the most recent one that aired in America. The question on everyone's mind right now is of course SPOILERZ XOMG! )

I haven't really been writing, like, at all. I'm such a failure. New ideas have been swimming around my head, though. And that key kid is still nagging at me. There's a new character as well--well, a new double-character, I guess. But I'll go over all of that in a locked post like usual.

So yeah! I'm alive, things have been good. Ithaca is as awesome as ever.
talkingsoup: (ferris wheel)
There's an interesting little phenomenon that happens at Ithaca and probably at most other East coast colleges. We have this long long long winter and then, just when you think you're going to just die from all the freaking clouds and snow and cold...spring arrives!

However, spring doesn't present itself here the way it does everywhere else in the world. It's not the little green shoots you see in the dirt, or spotting the first robin, or even the increasing temperature.

It's the return of that strange little thing called a Frisbee.

They hibernate in basements and inside drawers and closets all winter, but once it gets warm enough they wake up and take flight and probably make little Frisbees when we're not looking, since you see more of them every year.

And that's how you know spring has come to a college campus.

In short, HOORAY, SPRING! FINALLY!

Wow, I haven't updated in forever, huh? At least not with anything important. Three weeks of school left, I've registered for classes next semester (it's looking ugly, but after this year I think I can handle anything), and I've got an incredible amount of work coming up. The past weekend was kind of nightmarish. Julie and I went to Tammy's place to generally hang out and say hello to the kitties (they caught one of the ferals, a pretty one named Butch), but I had a hell of a lot of work to do this weekend as well, so it wasn't as relaxing as it could have been. Did manage to see an intriguing episode of Torchwood.

Got back middle of Sunday, wrote an entire paper, then pulled an all nighter Monday night reading a book and doing work. /wrists

Still working on getting the money together for the apartment. We still need to pay off the last month's rent, and Kate's going to cover the security.

I'm going to adopt a kitty! He's eight (six?) months old and he's a gray tabby named Grigio, but I'm going to rename him Elwood. Need to fill out the application and gather $65. Julie's adopting one as well, a girl named Ace who she's going to rename Nephry.

Also need to fill out an application to work at Brotchen, since I'm going to need a job this summer, and working at Brotchen sounds awesome. Though I should also start searching for other work, just in case.

I have concluded that EVERYONE likes Journey. People who say they don't are just in denial.

Oh, and, in another example of how the muse desires my death, I've come up with yet another over-elaborate idea for a story, which I'll talk about in an up-coming friends-locked post. (Paranoid? Whut?)

Showed Julie all of Dennou Coil and she died a little over it. Showed her episode 26 of Darker than Black, and she also died a little over it. Also, Mushishi is as awesome as ever in ASIC, and Baccano! is beginning to make some more sense. Persona 3 has gotten intense, Julie and I have set aside Tales of the Abyss until summer, and the RP continues to be abso-fucking-lutely awesome. Julie's going to app Kirihara (fuck yeah!)

There are two characters in Persona 3--Akihiko and Shinjiro--who remind me of Boone and Scryes, which kind of kills my heart a little.

Life is generally okay :)
talkingsoup: (writer)
So the other night, at 4 AM I finished Motley

It's kind of like giving birth to septuplets because it

weighs in at 725 pages and a total of

388,087 words
because I'm totally, completely and in all other ways

INSANE.

But! I've finished it. And oh my god it feels good.

And now I have ten million other things to do before I go down to Louisiana for a week and kill myself building houses and stuff~
talkingsoup: (awakening)
I found a dead lizard outside of apartment 25-1. No, seriously. A dead lizard. In winter, just skooshed there on the concrete, right outside the door. What the fuck! A dead lizard! It doesn't make sense! It goes against all logic!

Well. In other news, life and college is EATING MY FACE, and there's various drama shit going on, and we've apparently found an apartment. Or rather, a house. Um. Three floors, the most beautiful kitchen ever, four bedrooms, XOMG it is gorgeous and affordable, assuming we live with six people. So far that seems to be the plan. Julie's been buying furniture already! We're going to be responsible adults!...Sort of!

This means I have to get a job here for the summer, so I'm thinking of Brotchen, this awesome little bread-and-coffee shop down on the Commons.

Let's see. Tales of the Abyss continues to pwn. There's been quite a bit of brain break there recently. And I finally got my copy of Persona 3 which is prooobably the most amazing game ever. It consists of you shooting yourself in the head to summon a monster which fights other monsters. It's supremely existential and psychological and brilliant. The gameplay is probably the most elaborate of any game I've seen, and the soundtrack is pretty wonderful.

Also, the RP has gotten a whole lot more intricate, and there's a bunch of new people who have arrived, including the Tenth Doctor and the most recent Master, Persona 3 characters, a serial killer from "Dexter" and the main character from "Psych," among others. Woot.

ASIC has been room-hopping, and now we're in one of the lecture halls in Williams, which is pretty brilliant. Nodame Cantabile and Gurren Lagann have reached new heights of brilliance. Nodame has gotten more layered; and Gurren Lagann is about to do a timeskip (so I've heard).

Oh, right, Boskone. Well, it went from late Friday to the middle of Sunday, and it was awesome, as cons are wont to be. The panels were a lot more enjoyable than the ones at World Fantasy. Everyone was very friendly, there was a weapons display, and the art room had some amazing pieces in it. I didn't buy a single thing. I'm trying to cut back on my spending overall.

Amanda and Darcy, Julie's little sister, came with us, and we rode up with Tammy, Tim, Cara Coville and one of Bruce Coville's assistants. Good times were had by all, and now, thanks to Tim's podcasts, I think I want to learn some programming. /wrists

I also got a lot of writing done. Mot is this close to being finished. I intend to be up quite late tonight, writing.

...My icon makes me want to watch Ergo Proxy again.
talkingsoup: (haru)
You know, I would really, really like to be able to post some of my writing--none of the big stuff, but backstory stuff, drabbles, that kind of thing--on a place like DA. Not because I'm a whore for comments or what-the-fuck-ever, but because, I dunno, I want to know what people think. I love characters; I love my characters; I know other people like characters as much as I do. I love seeing people's original characters wandering around their galleries. I just think it would be nice to have that as well.

But dear God! I never knew places like DA were so fucking dramatic! DA used to be awesome and filled with awesome art and such, but now it's nothing but flame wars, personal attacks, fanart of the same damn shit over and over, and "OMG SRS BIZNIS!" When the hell did places like DA get this pathetic? People are leaving there in droves or going invisible because people are such assholes. If you post something that someone doesn't like, it's like a given that you'll be flamed.

I mean, at least if you write and publish a book, it's out there and you get people talking about it on forums, reviewing it on Amazon and such. Stuff like that is usually pretty easily avoided, to some degree, and of course you just learn to develop a thick skin over time. But posting something in a gallery? It's right there where you are, and when people like or dislike it, you hear about it immediately. It's the equivalent of writing a book and putting your home address and phone number on the cover.

I feel so bad for the poor artists and writers who post things on large sites like DA and then get run out of town with pitchforks shaped like lolcats or whatever! Whatever happened to "don't like it, don't read/view it?" Or was that ever the standard?

I feel like an old person for saying it, but whatever happened to common courtesy?

And don't even get me started on the art/writing theft. God! It's getting to the point where I'm almost afraid to post excerpts here under friends-lock for fear some little shit will find it and try to pass it off as their own or something. Admittedly, the only people who really know me online are RL friends, but I've been paranoid and self-conscious about my writing for my entire life. I would be devastated if I found Boone or Kaz or Violin or Kaiyss on someone else's site. That's a part of myself they'd be stealing!

And I do mean devastated. Like, "my boyfriend of 5 years broke up with me and I'm going to spend a month in bed now, kthxbye" devastated. I wouldn't know what to do with myself. How do you fight art/writing thieves, anyway? It's not like I understand copyright laws.

The theft thing was my main deterrent for posting anything online for the longest time (it's why anything that's writing related and specific to one of my projects goes under friend-lock). Now, recently, I'd been thinking I might give something like DA a try, but no! Everyone's too fucking immature and pathetic!

And on the flipside, dear god, what if I got the yaoi fanbrats slavering over E and Kail and being all "OMG BUTTSECKS KAWAII!"? What if I had people shipping characters who just shouldn't be shipped? Imagine the Kaz/Aidan shippers, since everyone's so into enemy!hate!sex these days. Christ!

If I ever get popular enough that kind of thing might happen anyway, but I just really don't want to see that kind of stuff when my babies are still learning to walk.

I'm not so arrogant to think if I did have a gallery or some shit that people would actually stop by to check it out. But still.

I love wank, don't get me wrong. Particularly fandom wank, because it's usually just so goddamn stupid that it's hilarious to watch. It's an entirely different matter when you've got personal attacks on someone's work going on. That's another beast entirely, one that should be put down.

So, thanks a lot, Internets. Way to completely discourage me from ever trusting people online with anything.
talkingsoup: (umbrella unnecessary)
I don't know how bad it is, but they wouldn't tell me anyway, so there's no point in asking. I'll just assume that it ain't good and act accordingly.

My Methods class is officially back in CNS now that the ceilings are repaired (I didn't see any damage). It's kind of a shame, even though Smiddy is grungy and far away. I no longer get to walk past Steve Zissou's head on my way to class (people have been doing those spray paint stencil faces all over campus. There's a Mr. Rogers near Park).

Also, I know I haven't mentioned this before, but Julie, Amanda and I are going with Tammy et. al. to Boskone, which'll go from Friday to Monday...ish. In any case, I'll be off campus for those four days. I'm quite excited because, well, it's a con, and Amanda is pretty much flipping out that she gets to travel with Tamora Pierce. Unfortunately I think this means that we'll end up missing ASIC this Thursday, since we'll have left by then. Guess I'll just have to download, muah-ha.

Oh, Boston.

I was up till 6 AM Saturday night and then about 4 AM last night writing for Motley Crew and XOMFG I think I'm ACTUALLY GOING TO FINISH IT. And, like, soon. Dear god, what am I going to do then?

My plan for now is to shift my focus back to the Pentagram rewrite since it's the one I want to step into the world of professional writing with. But I think I'm also going to start work on North, as well as the next installment of Motley Crew, since it's the only thing right now that I have solid ideas for.

The Mot I have right now was originally supposed to be only one book--the first in a trilogy--but you've heard me bitch and moan these past months about how massive the whole thing has become. Pretty much now we're looking at an EPIC serial. This book is probably going to be divided into two, if not three. I'm going to try and show restraint for the "next two books," though I'll probably fail as epiclly as I have this time around in that regard. In reality there isn't as much planned for the next two. The trilogy (remember it's now a series) was supposed to go kind of like this--book one presents a problem, book two elaborates on it, and book three resolves it. Kind of like a really, really, really big story arc.

The elaboration and resolution shouldn't take as much time (or space) simply because it pretty much consists of "everyone goes off and gets shit done, then there's a huge fucking fight scene."

Every epic should end (or almost end) with a huge fucking fight scene, methinks.

Well, we'll see how it goes. Much as I love my boys and girls of Mot, North and her buds have been calling out to me for the past year, and after taking that year to polish the world and certain parts of the plot to sparkling, I think it's high time I started work on it. But editing of Pentagram comes first. I don't intend to even start edits for Mot until this summer. My general policy after finishing something is to give it a thorough once-over and pick at it a little, but that will be it.

In other news, Julie and I are going to look at off-campus apartments today like REAL ADULTS. Oh god. The plan is to stay in Ithaca over the summer and find a place in town to live. I've got my sights set on a job on the Commons. Living off campus is apparently cheaper than living here, and also we get to have kitties.

After twenty-one years of wanting a cat, I can finally have one. No way I'm letting this opportunity pass by.
talkingsoup: (the doctor will see you now)
Tales of the Abyss has pretty much slayed Julie and I. It started out as this campy and kind of whatev game. Then it started getting all political and the storyline got a shitload more complex. And now it's become this emotionally-charged, super-complicated game full of questionable ethics and moral dilemmas and oh-my-God-awesomeness. I never expected it to get so intense. And I like the main character a lot more now.

The RP has likewise gotten crazy-intense and awesome.

Also, finally managed to read Tammy's "Terrier," since we had it for ARF (my independent study, in which we read sci-fi/fantasy all. the. time). It's definitely my favorite of Tammy's books (though I think I still like the Emelan world better). Beka is awesome. The language is awesome (I still find myself thinking in the slang). It was somewhat trying since I ended up staying up till 4:30 to finish it. But it was so worth it. Brilliant on all accounts.

CNS has apparently been repaired, maybe? ASIC is back there, though there's been no word about my classes.

Also, Mot is going swimmingly.

More TotA now, kthxbye.
talkingsoup: (far reach - you were saying?)
So I've been having my first ever classes in Smiddy Hall lately, Smiddy being the most damn-fuck furthest building from Gardens as you could like, except for Cerrache. And who knew Smiddy was the business school? I'd never been in there before. Why am I in there now? Well, because the ceilings above at least two classrooms in CNS--one of them being my classroom--collapsed. No one knows why. Even ASIC got kicked out of the building, though now we have the freaking conference hall in Williams. So it's a win-win, I suppose.

Tales of the Abyss proves to be awesome. At first it was just kind of fun times and equally fun to make fun of, particularly because Luke is such an ass, but now it's full of political stuff and awesome cut-scenes and mindfuck, all of which add up to equal much win and awesome.

Unfortunately I'm also bogged down with Phoenix Wright (finally have all 3 of them), FFXII or whatever the hell it is (Revenant Wings), and I just bought Zelda: Phantom Hourglass because I'm insane. Plus I've never really played a Zelda game, at least not all the way through (I seem to recall fucking around with, um, one of the earlier ones and Twilight Princess, but that's it. We never had any Nintendo stations). Not that I mind it, though it cuts in on the homework time and it's already looking like I'm screwed this semester. *sigh*

The RP continues to be brilliant. It's definitely making me hate crossovers less.

Went to Tammy's house this weekend, got no homework done but had a brilliant time. Saw "Mirrormask", which is a combination of Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Monkeybone, and Tommy. Beautiful, but I had no idea what was going on. The main actress was really good though.

Motley Crew is, at long last, rolling toward its final end. It's all downhill skiing from here, I should think, unless I run into unexpected roadblocks. At the very least, it's going to be fun. Epic battles and all.

It's about 4:30 and I have a plane to catch in about 4 hours, which means I need to wake up in about one so we can leave in two. Whhhyyy did I stay up this late?

Yes, I'm heading back to Ithaca about a week early, mostly because I want the time away from my family to write. Something I've done ALMOST NONE OF for this entire break, and for someone who was talking about finishing Motley Crew by the end of the year, that's simply unacceptable. Of course this always happens--as soon as I have some free time, I get writer's block, or get sick, or have real-life shit to deal with.

I did do some writing tonight, mostly world-building stuff. I decided that all the stuff for North has been kicking around in my head for long enough, and deserved to finally be on paper where I can sort through it all.

Did I mention that another new idea has sprouted? No? Let's just say it's based in a country that's like a cross between 1800's Japan and present-day Haiti (in terms of culture, mostly), involves gods, and involves a guy who works as the muscle at a brothel (he throws the johns out when they get drunk and start making a fuss). As well as a female samurai-type and poor old Naioh, my blind character who has officially made about ten moves from project to project. :3

I'm going to write it entirely in fangirl Japanese.

No, I'm kidding. I think Crow (main character, brothel guy) wouldn't know what to do if anyone screamed "KAWAII-DESU~!!!1!11!one!" at him.

Though I must admit that he certainly is kawaii-desu~ *is shot*

Still considering that RP. It's an absolute blast to watch, particularly when seeing The Master being called a poof by another character who has no clue who he's talking to. Lol, I might not have met him yet, but I at least get the sense that The Master would eat you for talking that way to him.

Now I really do have to go get in that hour of sleep before leaving. Agh. At least I'll be seeing Julie half way. We wrangled it so that the both of us will be on the same plane out of Detroit.

See you all back in Ithaca.

Well firstoff, I managed to recover my iPod. The stuff that had disappeared before...well, there's nothing I can do about that, though I did figure out that a lot of it was anime music. The rest I guess I'll just have to make do without. What can you do?

In other news, I have a bunch of reviews. Movies and anime.

I finally got around to watching Ergo Proxy, and now I'm sorry I put it off. I liked it so much I ended up watching the whole show in about three days. I remember we watched the first two episodes of this...I dunno, a year or two ago in ASIC. I liked it enough then that I downloaded the whole show, but didn't find the time to watch it--till now.

Anyway, it's sort of like...Eva, Paranoia Agent and Ghost in the Shell all mixed together. It's dark, psychological, mysterious and awesome. I'm still not entirely sure what the hell all happened in that show. There are several episodes that seem completely out of line with the rest of the show until you get to the end of the episode and realize how significant it was.

The show is a future post-apocalyptic show about a domed city, in which police officer-type Real Mayar and her android (called an Autorave) partner are investigating an infection among Autoraves that seems to give them emotions. It's called the Cogito virus. Along the way she encounters a monster that is neither human nor Autorave, and in the course of her investigation she meets an immigrant named Vincent Law who seems to be connected to the monster. The mystery of the monster, called a Proxy, draws Real, Vincent, and a childlike infected Autorave called Pino outside the domed city into the post-apocalyptic wasteland beyond.

For one thing, the animation is quite brilliant, and the character designs are unique and awesome. The characters themselves are pretty cool--Vincent is adorable and genuinely nice, Real is a selfish bitch who kicks ass and turns out to be awesome too, and Pino is just plain cute--and not in the annoying way that the typical child sidekick is. Also the storyline is pretty unique, and provides an interesting new spin on the post-apocalyptic genre.

The show is brilliant if only for all the allusions. Every episode has some sort of cultural reference in it--everything from art to philosophy to mythology to linguistics. Even the title is an allusion, in more ways than one. "Ergo" means "therefore" in Latin, and a proxy is a representative or emissary of something else. So, Ergo Proxy="therefore emissary." Which doesn't make much sense until the end of the show. But also, if you think of the title in conjunction with the virus infecting the Autoraves, Cogito, then you get "Cogito ergo sum," the famous saying by Descartes meaning "I think, therefore I am."

Heh, it all makes sense eventually.

It's confusing as hell, like I said, which only gets minorly annoying, but then I suppose that depends on your comfort level with that type of thing. It's definitely not the kind of anime you can just jump into in the middle, and it probably needs to be watched twice. But overall it's really, really good, and I'm a bit confused as to why it's not talked about much in the places you'd expect it to be.

The other night I decided to go see Juno, and when that was over I decided to be bad--Sweeney Todd was playing two theaters down, so I managed to slip in just as it was starting. Lol, I figure my eleven bucks for a movie might as well go all the way.

Anyway, Juno turns out to be as wonderful as everyone is saying it is. Juno herself is probably the most believable teenager to ever grace the big screen--ever--and I've fallen completely in love with the actress, Ellen Page. The other people in the movie were just as awesome, especially the couple that Juno is going to give her baby to, Mark and Vanessa. Every character in the movie is completely human and three dimensional, and your opinion of each character changes a little over the course of the movie. It reminded me a lot of Garden State--quirky suburban people caught up in the odd sort of real situations that crop up in real life. Plus a totally weird and awesome soundtrack.

I was also really impressed with the way they handled the issue of teenage pregnancy. It can get so damn melodramatic or boring or preachy or gimmicky or lame. But they did it absolutely perfectly. Juno doesn't freak out when she finds out she's pregnant, nor does she act like she's going to be one of those people who will leave her baby in a dumpster. But at the same time, it's not treated like this is just a plot point--you can tell through body language and through brilliant acting that this is a big deal, but that Juno's just not the kind of girl who will freak out about it. The movie isn't preachy or melodramatic in the least. They handle the issue exactly as the issue should be handled--honestly and realistically.

I love the parents reaction, too. Wonderful. And the movie itself is hilarious with lines like, "You should've gone to China, you know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events." And the one about the fountain and the Kraken, though I can't find that one.

Loved it. Deserves Oscars. Will buy it.

Score: 9.5 out of 10

The Sweeney Todd I snuck into turned out to be for the hearing impaired which kind of put a damper on the whole thing, but it was worth the $0 I spent on it. I did like it a lot--I was a bit worried because people have been screaming and yelling about this movie and not usually in a good way, plus I haven't read the book or seen the play. Though I intend to see the play next chance I get. I guess people are saying that it wasn't at all like the play and that the play was better, which is usually the case when you have plays get adapted for the big screen. But, oh well. I suppose that left me free to judge it as a movie and not to compare it to anything.

Anyway, it was hilarious. Probably the best dark comedy I've seen in, well, forever. Absolutely pitch black humor, as can be expected of Tim Burton, and of the original material (I have seen clips of the plays so I have a sense). The only reason I didn't laugh more is because there were two other people in the theater and I felt like a bit of a freak for laughing every time someone had their throat slit. Not that it's something to laugh at, but they seriously went out of their way to make the blood look totally fake. Hooray for red corn syrup! The song "A Little Priest" almost made me wet myself, especially the line about poets.

The movie had Tim Burton's classic "foggy dark overcast death doom destruction" feel to it, which I always like, and the characters were pretty brilliant, as was the acting. Johnny can actually sing, though as Molly pointed out, he's certainly not a baritone. I loved Mrs. Lovett's cavalier attitude with things like murder, cannibalism, and child abuse.

And Alan Rickman? Oh my god. You could not have found a more perfect actor. He was the most pervy, creepy guy I've seen on screen in awhile who wasn't in a super-serious role. Absolutely brilliant. "You gandered at my ward, did you not?" Fuck yeah.

The only real problem I had with the movie was that Johnny Depp seems to think that all Londoners sound like Jack Sparrow. Though fortunately he managed to keep the Sparrow voice to a minimum, but still. Come on now. There are more accents in Britain than just the London one, and even London has multiple accents (though don't ask me to try and differentiate).

A totally awesome, hilarious and campy dark comedy, and brilliant as the movie itself, though I couldn't say how it rates next to the play. Still, taken on its own, I thought it was great and loved it.

Nice to not pay for it, too.

Score: 8 out of 10

Last but not least, I finally managed to see Hot Fuzz. I never did see Shaun of the Dead so I can't compare it, but I loved it. The editing was abso-fucking-lutely perfect. Not in that awesome way you see in the really wonderful movies, but the editing was perfect for the movie it was for, which was a parody. The editing consisted entirely of quick cuts and dramatic shots which is pretty much the equivalent of shooting you in the face with "I am an action movie!"

Have I ever mentioned that I love British humor? And this movie was no exception. It was hilarious. The gore was totally over-the-top, as were the fight scenes (though funnily enough the acting wasn't, lol). You can tell the actors had fun with this. Especially with the gay subtext they had going on, hahaha.

The climax is too awesome for words. Nicholas Angel (main character) comes riding through the village with more weapons than it is humanly possible to character...riding a white horse. Yes. Too brilliant.

Not much else to say, really, except to reiterate that I loved it. To bits.

Score: 8 out of 10

Denno Coil--that anime I mentioned the other day--continues to be awesome. Also, I downloaded the first two episodes of Gundam 00 to find out what the fangirls are barking about, and I still can't figure it out. It's exactly the same as all the other Gundam shows. I wanted to laugh when one of the characters is watching one of the Gundams attack and looks at it through binoculars to find the name "Gundam" on it and is like "Gundam? What's that?" I'm pretty sure I yelled "haven't you ever watched anime?" at my computer. Puh-leeze. Anyway, my patience with the show was already thin at the end of the first episode, but when they revealed pretty much the exact same plot as the first series in this one, I was just bored. And I totally lost my patience when the Gundam boys went into "former Sri-Lanka" to stop the Tamil-Sinhalese ethnic war that had been "going on there for hundreds of years." As someone who actually knows a little bit about the struggle, seeing the anime treat the conflict like nothing more than a plot point was bad enough, but when they sent in the Gundams and had them slaughter both sides in one of the skirmishes, I lost my patience with the show (the whole point of the Gundams this time is to "end war." With more war. So you know that before long the characters are gonna be all "this is wrong!", end up thinking for themselves, leave the fray, find true love, yadda yadda).

Also, the fangirls are all melting over the characters, but I frankly don't see the appeal. They're completely lame and generic. You have the "angsty guy with the tortured past" the "maverick gunslinger" the "true-believer" and the "nerves-of-steel, silent killer." CLEE-SHAY. The women are completely superfluous, never mind that I find it hard to believe that one of those guys (the nerves of steel one) is male. There's simply no way. And they're really not that hot either.

In other news, Cloverfield is coming out soon, and a lot more info has cropped up. Y'alls need to check this out liek woah. Five videos of fake news footage about a oil rig belonging to a company called Tagruato, which is connected with Slusho!, being sucked under the water. All the evidence at this point is pointing to an underwater monster. Check it--it's badass:

French news

Spanish news

Italian news

German news

English news

The "on-site footage" used is the same for each, but each newscast gives a few tidbits of info that the others don't. And the footage is awesome enough. If you want to see some of the translations, check [livejournal.com profile] 011808. They have some extra info too.

My writing has come to a standstill, which usually happens during breaks, but what can you do? *sigh*

Nothing else to report, really.

I've kind of sucked lately at doing reviews, so I figured it was high time to get back in the habit. Especially since this weekend you can expect a very detailed account of The Golden Compass. Very. Detailed.

SPOILER WARNING on all of these.

First and foremost, Avatar had it's kinda-sorta mid-season finale on Friday. The date of its return is still up in the air, though the episodes are written, so they're unaffected by the writer's strike. We're thinking sometime in January. We had Amanda, Michelle, a guy friend of theirs, and Sophia over to watch it, and even Molly, who doesn't usually watch Avatar, joined in.

Momo singlehandedly takes down the Fire Nation )

Last weekend was the first ASIC marathon of the year. Twelve hours. We watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is probably one of the most famous animes ever, though I had never seen it. To finish it off, we watched the infamous Eva movie, appropriately titled "The End of Evangelion."

Psychological Trauma, or, Pay No Attention To the Thing Living Inside My Hand )

And last but not least, the Heroes kinds-sorta-maybe season finale.

With MIND BULLETS! )

Long entry.

In the meantime, I'm thinking of writing a letter of recommendation for my professor's tenure portfolio. Just need to figure out how exactly I go about doing that. And I'm pretty sure that I'm going to exchange my Soc major for a minor. Not entirely because of what's been going on with Margo, though it was a catalyst--but frankly, if I switch to a minor, it frees me up to take classes I actually want to take. There are so many awesome-looking classes, but I wouldn't be able to take any of them because I still need a shitload of credits for my major. I would already have had to take a summer class. I think Ithaca College has sucked enough money from my poor parents.

And in other news, Motley Crew is on a downhill slope toward the end. FINALLY.
