You know, I didn't realize today was Good Friday until yesterday? Which meant I kind of forgot about certain plans and made conflicting plans, but it looks like everything's gonna work out. Gonna watch Casino Royale, finally, with Pat, and then later that night me and the other three are doing our traditional Good Friday viewing of Jesus Christ Superstar. Should be fun. Saturday I'm going to kill myself with work and then I'm going to see Grindhouse with Pat. And Sunday being Easter, I'm going to an Easter dinner with Sophia and Julie and the others, I think.
I have a shitload to do this weekend, though. I've been procrastinating and everything has finally crashed down on me. I've gotta get into my two research papers, though the one about Iran is coming along pretty nicely, and I've got some good ideas for Jonestown.
The 300 soundtrack is TEH SEX, just so's you all know.
So, judging by my icon, some of you might realize that the twenty-fifth episode of Death Note came out on Wednesday.
Episode 25. Best fucking Death Note Episode ever, despite the content.
For those of you who have read the manga, you'll know what happens in this episode. For those of you who haven't, SPOILERS!
This was the episode, the episode where L dies.
The way everything happened was kind of a departure from the manga, but that's fine with me because they did it so fucking well. I honestly think it's actually better than how they did it in the manga (though I wish they had kept L's last words in). The episode was almost brushing on L backstory--we got a look at the orphanage and the day Watari came to take him to Wammy's House. There was even a glimpse of chibi L, or rather the top of his head.
Then, there was the roof scene.
Okay, really. Just alone, the roof scene was perfect. That doesn't happen often. I can think of a couple from Naruto, Honey and Clover, Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin and a few others, but there aren't many. The scene was just so impromptu and real and wonderful. L is standing in the rain under a satellite dish when Light comes across him and asks him what he's doing. Light has to end up walking out into the rain as well because L can't hear him calling. And L doesn't say much except that "the bells are loud today."
You can tell he knows. I mean, there's so much going on in this scene. There's this subtle connection going on between Light and L. There's the foreshadowing, of course. And you can just tell that L knows his time is coming to an end.
And right after this wonderful, spectacular roof scene is a scene inside where they're drying off--and it's full of religious imagery.
And yanno, normally I don't really like religious imagery--of any kind, Christian or otherwise--in a non-religious show, if only because it's rarely done well. Too often it feels tacked on, gimmicky, going for the sentimentality. Mostly what I think about is the episode of X-files where William is born. The entire episode was done up to make it look like the birth of Jesus, and though it was a good episode, it just felt off, like, come on guys, you could incorporate this better. But it was just done so well in this episode of Death Note. It took a less obvious Christian reference of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples and made it work so well. Oh man. It felt totally like Jesus and Judas, and not so much in a way that you're like "okay, L is Jesus!!" but just like, "wow, betrayal, holy fuck."
Overall the episode was perfect, I mean utterly perfect, the way Ballad of Fallen Angels from Cowboy Bebop is perfect, the way the last episodes of Ouran High School Host Club and Honey and Clover are perfect, the way the Haruhi-Hikaru episode in Ouran was perfect, the way the last two episodes of the Sasuke Retrieval arc and the Lee-Gaara fight in Naruto were perfect, the way the betrayal episode of Gankutsuo was perfect, the way Rukia's departure was perfect in Bleach. It happens rarely, but when it does, it resounds.
We've gotten Sophia up to episode 9 of Heroes and we're two episodes away from finishing Ouran. Which of course are two of the best episodes in the series. Woot!

Date: 2007-04-06 07:53 pm (UTC)Oh, and are any of your friends interested in seeing Grindhouse tomorrow? I invited Alec and Andrew and they seem on board.
Yeah, that roof scene was spectacular. It was so obvious that L knew that Light was Kira and that he knew that by employing the 13 Days rule, he had beaten him and that he would probably die before being able to disprove the 13 Days rule. He also clearly respected Light despite all of this. It was incredible.
I also enjoyed the musical interlude sung by Misa. It was almost like a victory song for Team Kira.
Yay Heroes!

Date: 2007-04-06 09:02 pm (UTC)A few of them are seeing it today, and other than that, I don't think so.
Oh my god I know. And wet L was fun to look at, when all's said and done. I liked Misa's song too. Arrgh, I'm gonna miss L. I really hope Mello and Near kick more ass than they did in the manga.
Hiros!
