And Things

My father's birthday was today. I was on my feet from when I woke up (1) to only a few hours ago, cooking. We made strawberry soup, which is awesome for summer, and awesome in general, plus baby potatoes, parmesan halibut and the traditional German chocolate cake for dessert. Twas much awesomeness, despite the catastrophe the kitchen soon became, and the cake didn't rise too well, but the strawberry soup was tre yummy, as was the halibut and all the rest. Woot for birthday dinners even when they're not your own.

That said, I haven't done much else today, other than burn some CDs. I finished Azumanga Daioh last night (squee!). I think after Naruto and the two most recent ones are done I'm gonna quit for the summer. I have enough anime. And I want to force myself to focus on writing.

Speaking of writing, I got through the scene with the bad guys last night. It went pretty well, I think, as you get a taste of one of my best bad guy's inner thoughts, as well as a glimpse of the man behind everything. Sort of. I also sorted some stuff out involving Taenailo and who and what he is. The story is definately getting complicated--all these stories running parallel to each other. It's probably gonna end up being longer than I anticipated. Which means I'm gonna have to think up some more major revelations and stuff for the second and third books. I already have some ideas.

We just watched Strangers on a Train which is a black and white Hitchcock film. Pretty much, this guy, Bruno, meets a tennis player, Guy, on a train. Guy hates his wife, so Bruno offers to kill her for him, so long as Guy kills Bruno's father in exchange. Guy laughs it off, but Bruno ends up going through with it and the story spirals from there. It's pretty cool--I haven't seen that many Hitchcock films, and I think I liked Rear Window better. There were also a few continuity errors--like, at one point these guys are getting into a car and talking, and you can hear their voices echoing, so it's like, "Hey! We're on a soundstage!" Also the clouds appear behind the sun at one point (I burst out laughing). But aside from a rather slow beginning, the story was pretty good. Plus the ending was kick ass. It was the most awesome climax of any movie I've ever seen. Seriously. Awesome in a kind of hilarious way, because Bruno and Guy end up fighting on an out-of-control merry-go-round, and then this little old man (who is my favorite character, even though he has one line) crawls underneath to stop it, and then the whole damn thing just kind of crumbles in an extremely loud and awesome way. I can't really describe it, but how many movies have a practically explosive merry-go-round in its climax?? Oh man.

Also, I think Bruno was in love with Guy. It was so obvious.

I've still gotta see Vertigo and I should probably see Psycho. I love Hitchcock.
