Damn the Muse
Jun. 27th, 2004 06:38 pmCurses!
My muse is an evil little bitch, but I suppose this time it isn't entirely her fault. It's partially my own fault, after all, for reading the Fearless series. But my bitchy muse is the one that convinced me to act on it.
See, I had this idea for a series a while ago, a teen series, so of course it would involve all the goodies that go along with teen-interest books/transgressive fiction, and like certain series's (like Fearless, which I didn't know at the time I came up with the idea) will involve the kids having special powers--because try as I might, I can't go anywhere in the literary world without throwing in some fantasy aspect. This was back when my muse was a hyper little thing, throwing out ideas about five times a week. As I started the series I realized I had no idea where the damn thing was supposed to go (direction wise), and that I really hadn't researched that much into the technologies that would be involved (such as cloning).
Well--thanks to the muse and to Francine Pascal, bless/damn her--I'm picking up the idea again. It actually might be good for me, so I can find out which genre I belong in, if I belong in any one. After all, few people have the ability to write fantasy novels AND teen series, AND general fiction (something else I'm planning on doing). I always like the idea of teens with special powers in the modern world, with all the modern conveniences--it gets tiring, relying on bows and arrows and horses--and thankfully I never really throw an idea out, so what I did write during that period of my life (when my muse was on speed) is still in the depths of this computer.
This, of course, on top of my Alchemist trilogy, the Dragon-girl trilogy (?), and some other projects that I'm not working on right now but intend to complete. And writing a series like this is no mean feat. We're talking pumping good, thrilling novels out about once a month. I really don't know how these people do it. I am going to try, because I do like the idea--but like Dragon-girl, I'm not going to work too hard on it, not until Alch. 1 is finished and the next two books are at least outlined or synopsitized (that's not a word, I know).
So I spent all day researching various medical conditions relevant to said series, and listing paranatural (that a word?) powers--the usual, like telekinesis and precognition, but also some other interesting ones like Astral projection and psychometry.
*sigh*
Well, in the world of Taranthar things are still going smoothly--Rowan and Fell are developing their relationship and they draw ever closer to the Archipelago and the Next Big Event.
Now, for the benefit of my many many many readers so they have an idea how idiotic my muse is, this is a list of my projects that I am either working on or intend to work on. Mind you, these are just code names, they're not even tentative titles.
Alch Trilogy--this one's self-explanitory.
Taenailo--one that I've worked on but is now dormant, a fantasy involving cats (taenailo is the main cat's name)
Teen series--see above.
You Are Here--this one has a title, it'll be about a college kid who decides to visit every US state in one year
Wolf Trilogy--not even a good code name. This will be similar to Taenailo, an animal fantasy involving guess what.
Dragon-girl--mentioned previously, a story (possibly trilogy) involving a half Dragon half human girl...and that's it so far.
Kiala--something that will probably end up being scrapped because it's now so similar to Alch. 1--involves a girl born into a prophecy who has to go to elemental realms to stop an evil critter.
Looking at the above list, I suddenly want to curse my muse into a million pieces.
