Death Note Ends and Other Things

So I like the Death Note anime ending a lot better than the manga ending, though I still don't think it's perfect
Light's freakout was fantastic. Near's cool reaction was awesome. Everyone being all "ho-shit!" Was wonderfully done. Light's final moments were spectacular.
But I dunno. I liked the changes they made. For one thing, they had Mikami kill himself in the warehouse. For another, they had Light actually run out of the warehouse before he died as well. Him running away and kind of reliving everything was extremely well done, and like I said, his final moments were perfect, I think. I always thought that in the manga Light should have seen L right before he died. After all, I like to think that L was the one who truly beat him--L is the one who chose Near and Mello, and he's the one who left all the necessary information to them. Plus he's the one I actually care about, lol, though I did like Near in the anime a lot better than in the manga.
A few things were off with this episode, though.
For one thing, they didn't do enough of Light's classic "okay, I'm in X situation, now how to get out of it," which they had a bit more of in the manga. It's not like he went completely off the deep end. He started talking and running through ideas in his head. That's the way he works, after all, so to have him not do it here is just character inconsistency.
For another thing, they downplayed Matsuda too much. I thought they did it all very well, but in the manga there was this whole "oh my fucking god, Matsuda just shot him!" moment. Like, suddenly you realized that Matsuda actually had some balls. I'm not sure what it was...maybe it's just that it was surprising when I read it in the manga, and since I already knew what would happen, it just wasn't as surprising this time? Maybe, I dunno. It just seems like something was a bit missing from Matsuda's whole reaction. I suppose that's also because they did a "1 year later" thing with him. Most of it was just him talking and it was kind of lame, but it did give you a better sense of just how much this event stressed him.
That's another thing. I really liked the cult scene in the end of the manga. I think they should have kept that in.
Lastly, Ryuk should have been face to face with Light when he killed him. In the manga, Light completely forgot Ryuk's promise to him. Ryuk should have flown down there and been all "I'm gonna kill you, lol." If they had wanted to make a really meaningful change for the anime, they could have done that, and instead of having Light freak out, have him be all, "well this fucking sucks."
Although...admittedly Light's not a quitter and would have been denying it to the very last second, but I still think it should have been a face to face thing. Light knew he was dying from the gunshot wounds anyway. Maybe they could have had a thing like, he sees L, realizes he's completely lost, and just sort of resigns himself to it. Maybe.
Overall, I thought it was really well done. It was a great ending to a series I thought was very, very brilliant. It's had to make a manga with that much brainwork and inner monologue and very little physical action work, but they pulled it off (and we all got a laugh from the uber-dramatic writing. I love when Mikami actually got up and was all "HOLY SHIT SPASM-WRITING!")
Farewell, Death Note. I shall miss you.
Yesterday was my first day of work and it wasn't too bad. There was a glitch in the computer or something so I'm technically not entered as an employee, which means I couldn't start the training. So I spent the better part of the day cleaning off the shelves since the regional manager came today (I wasn't there--no work today). Which actually don't mind, shockingly. It's menial work, but I really don't mind that kind of stuff. It's different from folding boxes all fucking day at Nordstrom's, because it wasn't totally mind-numbing--I got to look at the movie boxes, got to see pretty much the entire horror, special interest and anime sections. This actually led me to discover that they had Karas on DVD so I could rend it. But yeah. Cleaning I don't mind. If they had asked me to, like, put DVDs in cases for 9 hours then I'd probably be like, "lol, no."
Overall it went well, though now my back hurts. It hasn't done that in years. *sigh*
He's supposed to call me for my next day to come in. Once I'm in the system and doing the training I should have work more regularly.
But yeah, I used up three of my week's free rentals by getting two anime movies, Karas and X, and getting Little Miss Sunshine which I hella want to see. I haven't watched any of them yet, but there will be reviews once I do. For the record, Karas is a recent movie I've seen in a few AMVs that looked really pretty, and involves the overlap of human and ghost worlds in Tokyo. X is one of the classics, a good old-fashioned CLAMP movie. I figure I need to see something from CLAMP at least once in my life, and I'd rather it be this than...well I can't think of anything else other than Chobits. Though I have to admit a certain curiosity for Cardcaptor Sakura and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I dunno. I've heard alternating things about X but it's another one of those movies that pretty much everyone has seen.
Ugh, I gotta watch Eva one of these days.
The fanfic, meanwhile, is well underway.
