talkingsoup: (it's all about the hat)
You know, after being so depressed that I ended up wearing black for a week after the 2004 Election, to say that the results of yesterday's election was heartening would be a gross understatement.

We won! We did it! People are sick of corruption, stupidity, attacks on rights and lies, and they let it be heard! This is a major blow for Bush and his far-right friends, ladies and gentlemen.

There's actually hope now, for progressivism. Gay, civil, women's rights! The end of abstinence-only education! The end of teaching Intelligent Design or Creationism in science classes! We might even be able to shorten the war!

The results, so far, are that the Dems have taken back the House in all but a landslide victory. The Senate still hangs in the balance, with a potential recount in Virginia and a very close race in Montana. Frankly, I don't mind if the Dems don't take the Senate. I think that would actually be good for everyone, if the House were Democratic controlled and the Senate were Republican controlled--it would force actual discussion and cooperation, something the parties are sorely, sorely lacking.

And you remember that atrocious anti-abortion thing passed in South Dakota? Gone. Dead. Shot down. Defeated. Women's rights triumphs!

We've got a female Speaker of the House for the first time.

Foley and DeLay are gone, fuck yes.

Meanwhile in California, the Senators were re-elected--no surprise--and Schwarzenegger was re-elected as well. Which I don't mind much. He hasn't been on Bush's side for awhile now, he's moderate, and he's been doing a relatively decent job.

I'm just really, really, really fucking happy that Pombo is out. Dear God I hated that man. He was the representative in the House for my district, and was the biggest anti-environment asshole on the planet, but now he's GONE.

I'm not sure about all the propositions that passed; I haven't heard yet. I know gay marriage was on some ballots, and there was an abortion thing on California's, but so far I haven't heard anything.

Whee! This is major, guys! No more far-right bullshit! Now progressivism can have its say!

EDIT

I looked up the proposition results.

85, which would have forced doctors to inform parents of minors before performing abortions, was shot down.

87, which would have increased taxes on gas in order to force oil companies to research alternative energy, was also shot down.

Same with 90, which was the bill that would have limited eminent domain.

Very, very, very happy about 85 not passing!
