The Universe smiles on me. I never expected that movie to open at a mainstream place like Regal (the only theater nearby). Shows the kind of foresight I have.

So, I saw it. Tried to get Varsha or Liz to come with, but Liz wasn't interested and I couldn't get a hold of Varsha. *sigh*

It's...

...

I don't know. I went into this movie with a lot of expectations, and I think each and every one of them were met. Not that I'm the best of judges, and not that I claim to know how it is, but this movie felt...real. On an emotional level. I mean, I've read the story, so I knew going into it that this wasn't a love story about two men; it's a love story about two people. That obviously had an impact on how I watched this movie. What I mean to say is that I don't know. At the end there are no answers. I left the theater feeling like Ennis does at the end of the story--not entirely sure of anything, only that it was good. And real.

From an art and political standpoint, this movie is just what we need (in an "all you need is love" way as well as a "this country needs to move forward" way). From a movie standpoint it was incredible. I mean, the acting! The cameras! The landscape shots!! The chemistry between the characters (all of them)!! I mean, I'm no film student, but this movie was amazing on all levels.

I haven't been paying much attention to the politics around this movie. I mean, obviously there are fundies out there who are pissed, and obviously there are liberals out there saying it's the poster-movie for liberalism (or whatever). It's understandable, everything's about politics these days, but the movie itself kind of detaches itself from all the bullshit. There's more a sense of, "They're in love, see? Leave them alone." I hear this movie's a front-runner for the Oscars thus far, but I really hope they don't over-politicize it. No one needs that, especially not the characters themselves. Heh, the writer in me speaking.

The bottom line is, this was a good movie.

"There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it."
